Can’t touch this…? May 25, 2009

So as some of you may know already, I’ve been working a lot lately. Now work is good, but all work and no play … well there’s a saying there somewhere. And usually after working this much, I feel the need to reward myself. Now I recently upgraded my camera, but that only cost me about $60 since I sold my old one.

I was thinking about getting an ipod touch. First, let me explain that I can’t upgrade my phone to a smartphone/iphone/blackberry since I can’t afford a data plan right now. Now I’d probably use the touch more for web/apps than music. Lately I’ve been keeping my computer on just for RSS, Email, Facebook, and Twitter. It would be much easier just to have that in my pocket. So I’m asking anyone out there on their thoughts. Maybe you don’t have an iPod touch, but you use something else for wifi action. I would love to hear what you have to say. Now I won’t have 3G service, so it’s not really an “always on” type of deal, but for all intensive purposes everywhere that I’d want to check email I’ll have wifi. Friends, family, school, all have wifi. So when I’m in the car I can’t get online. But should I really be twittering while driving? I know some of you are guilty of that, lol.

Also, if I do pick one up, I’m starting to run into a gadget overload. Most of you female readers wouldn’t understand this, or at least you shouldn’t have to, because you already have a solution. Imagine now, at any given time I might want to have my cell phone, wallet, car keys, camera, ipod touch, and a DS/PSP. I just don’t have that many pockets, nor would I want to have to worry about accidentally sitting on any of them. Short of man-bags or fanny packs coming back into style I think I’m doomed. Perhaps if I currently lived in a bigger city a messenger bag wouldn’t look so out of place? Either way, I guess I’ll just have to leave the camera/DS behind unless I plan ahead.

So I’ve reinstalled my laptop with Kubuntu. And I must say I’m super happy with it. I’ll put together a more technical post tomorrow, but I just thought I’d share that I’m happy. I’ve used linux before, but it was awhile ago and it took a lot of work. It really amazes me how far things have come, and how smoothly everything works. Also, I thought about putting together a post about my thoughts on N. Korea launching their missile, however I was sidetracked with a coding project.

I hope all is well in the blogworld, and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

So I installed Windows Live Writer to see how it compared to other blogging software. And one of the fancy widget options was to add a map, then the map had a “Birds Eye View”. Then I found it, and I’m really excited. From what I can tell Writer is pretty nice, a lot better than using Word, and cleaner than using the wordpress site.

It also lets me add pictures with easy borders, so lets try that!

Tampa '08Well that’s pretty cool. It’d be even better if I could write on the photo, but I can’t complain. (Well I guess I just did) Alright, well you’ve been putting up with my randomness, so one more then I’ll be done! It claims it can add a Photo album, so what’s that going to look like? Let’s see!

I’m not even sure where those pictures will be hosted, lol. Anyways, if you read all this, thanks for following along. If not, no hard feelings, lol.

Werewolf in Scranton? Aka Why I love Wikipedia March 23, 2009

So where did my journey start today? Well I was on facebook looking at a friend’s profile picture. It’s a picture of them with their hand in one of the Hollywood Star looking things. And the star is for Perry Como. Now, I didn’t know who Perry Como was, so off to Wikipedia I go! So I’m reading about this guy when I come across his trivia. And it mentions that he’s a seventh son of a seventh son. Again, I’m at a loss of knowledge, so I need to see what means. Pretty cool folklore things going on there. Then I find a subsection called Ireland. Being Irish I quickly look to soak up some more information, when I get to this: “The seventh son of a seventh son is gifted as a healer. There are several cases of an Irish healer in Scranton, Pennsylvania.” So that gets me to a healer in Scranton, but where did the werewolf come from? Well, (I’m glad you asked) according to Latin America, the seventh son of a seventh son is commonly believed that he will be a werewolf or lobizón. And there you have it folks, a werewolf in Scranton, and it all started with Perry Como, who just so happens to be born in PA. About 5 hours away from Scranton, in Canonsburg.

Now Wikipedia may have some critics, but I must say, outside of my classroom knowledge I’ve learned more from Wikipedia than any other single source. Do I care that it’s only 99.8% right? No, I just like the fact that I can get so much random information in one place. Although I must say, it is easy to get lost in Wikipedia. One minute you’re reading about your favorite movie, then 30 minutes later you’re reading about battles that happened in the civil war, another hour goes by and you know all about Britney Spears’ sister. Don’t ask me, it just happens.
